In contrast 'Madden 2001' for PlayStation and PlayStation 2 sold more than 2 million units, took in $92 million and it was No.3 on the sports console list. 'Madden 2001' was 25th overall among all PC games, a category that saw 'The Sims' at No.1 with 1.7 million sold and $72 million taken in. Well, it may not be so for other genres, but one wonders how long PC sports games can be developed when they are so completely demolished in sales by console games. This past year, there were a plethora of columns with headlines proclaiming the end of PC gaming, only to soften that pronouncement with a conclusion that said it just wasn't so.

Last year, console titles were outselling PC games by about 5-to-1. Perhaps the real story is the paltry numbers PC games are doing in comparison with their console counterparts. That's impressive, considering the game was released in September and had its own PlayStation 2 version to compete with. If you qualify the top-selling list to include full-price games only, 'Madden NFL 2001' (third overall) filled the top spot and earned the most money, nearly twice that of 'Backyard Baseball' at $8.5 million.
